Thousands of new model Teslas have been recalled over a safety risk that could injure drivers.

The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts issued a vehicle recall notice on Friday for all Tesla 2025 Model Y vehicles.

A software defect was identified in about 7300 Teslas in Australia that affects the driver’s-side window’s automatic protection system.

A regulator spokesman said the system may not operate as intended and result in the window closing with excessive force on any obstruction, including body parts.

“If a body part is in the window space when the driver’s-side window is closing, it can increase the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant,” a spokesman said.

Tesla owners of affected vehicles will be contacted in writing to address the issue.

“An over-the-air software update will be installed on all affected vehicles which does not require a service appointment,” a spokesman said.

“If your vehicle is running software version 2025.26.6 or later, your vehicle is not subject to this issue.

“You can confirm your vehicle’s software version by tapping ‘Controls’ > ‘Software’ on your touchscreen.”
