Beyond the Saleyards: Processors lift quotes as sheep market tightens

Sheep and lamb markets continue to tighten. All WA processors have lifted their quoted prices over the past fortnight to attract more stock. Realistically, though, it has swung to a seller’s market, making buyer bids only a starting point for a conversation. Not much stock is moving at the quoted prices and it is actually being traded somewhat higher. Sellers are now commanding a higher price, and with east coast buyers also after stock, they’re in a much stronger position. East-coast lambs are well above $8, and mutton is above $4. Based on this market, buyers will soon stop quoting prices, fearing they will bid the market up. This means it is a great time for sellers to start offering stock in our marketplace to see what buyers are willing to pay. A simple listing with a negotiable target price lets buyers know you have stock available if they can pay a reasonable price. On the east coast, prices have become less available, too. However, rising goat prices tell us mutton is also hard to find. Cattle are also becoming harder to find. Export orders have started to come out again, with prices now above $2.80 for steers. Local cattle are also difficult to access, with multiple buyers looking for cows with calves.
