Sissy review: Keyboard strokes rather than knife strokes inspired the writing of this Aussie slasher flick

3 stars Starring: Aisha Dee, Hannah Barlow, Emily De Margheriti, Daniel Monks, Yerin Ha Rating: TBD In Cinemas: Screening as part of the Revelation Film Festival, July 7-17 Slasher films are not for everyone, but they certainly have a dedicated following, who’ll eagerly accept pretty much any blood-soaked offering that comes their way. The conventions of the genre are so well-established that films such as 1996’s Scream can simultaneously lampoon and honour them, and do so with great success. That film became the highest grossing slasher movie of all time, until it was overtaken in 2018 by Halloween, which proved something else about the genre — fans just can’t get enough. There’s no other way to explain the continued popularity of a Halloween franchise that has produced 12 films and required more reboots than a PC still running Windows 95. And, given slasher films can be successful on relatively small budgets, the genre remains attractive to filmmakers. But, when Aussie directors Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes set about making their slasher film, Sissy, it was keyboard strokes and not knife strokes that motivated their writing. Just as much as any torture inflicted on its characters, the film skewers the world of social media creators, and, in particular, the rise of wellness influencers, who earn their clicks by peddling bogus health messages. We’re introduced to wellness influencer Cecelia, played by The Bold Type star Aisha Dee, who posts a message to her many followers, instructing them on how to be the best version of themselves through mindfulness and other hackneyed wellness tropes. As the likes pile up from this latest post, we quickly learn Cecelia doesn’t exactly practice what she preaches, and is, by pretty much any measure, failing at life. When she bumps into an old friend at the shops, who knew her as Sissy back in the day — foreshadowed by a childhood flashback that opens the film — Cecelia is invited to a hen’s weekend for said friend at a luxurious luxurious house in outback Australia. Despite leading an introverted and rather sad life that belies her public-facing appearance as a wellness guru, Cecelia agrees to go, mostly because this group of friends is enamoured of her social media celebrity. But, once she’s out in the middle of nowhere, things soon begin to unravel when it’s revealed one guest at the event is the girl who used to bully her mercilessly at primary school. As previously stated, this is unashamedly a slasher movie, so you can reasonably expect the film to end with less characters than it started with, but it is how and why the characters are brutally dispatched that adds the interest. The film, which admittedly is very modest in scope, was well-received at SXSW this year, and a worthy choice to open Revelation Film Festival this year. But the real reason to see this is Dee, who is absolutely riveting in the lead role. Sissy screens as part of the Revelation Perth International Film Festival (July 7-17) ahead of opening in cinemas on October 27.
