Neighbours actress Jane Hall’s latest role in Wentworth icing on the cake

Jane Hall is approaching an age milestone without any bitterness. She turns 50 in March and doesn’t resent the number or the fact she is single. Her lament is that time has gone too quickly, but over the course of half a century, she has excelled as a loving parent, measured actor, trusted radio host and admired theatre performer. Since the age of 13, she has grown up in the entertainment industry. “It’s great in some ways and in other ways, it’s really snuck up on me,” Hall says of her age. “Sometimes I just think, ‘wow, you’re really that old, Jane’. “I’ve sort of grown up on camera, too, and I’ve been really privileged to do lots of different work across radio and TV and film and theatre. I’ve packed a lot into the last 35 years and I do see time marching all over my face some days, let me tell you. “I just think it’s always been my approach to be as versatile as possible and keep as many doors open. Some could see it as the wrong decision to make. I just love to work, so whatever that work looks like is still a joy to me and something that needs to be pursued.” Hall was dating someone earlier this year after being introduced by family members, and she had also dabbled briefly on dating apps at the urging of her good friend, fellow actor Rebecca Gibney. That relationship didn’t work out but she isn’t fussed. “That was then and this is now,” she says. “I had high hopes but onwards and upwards. Certainly dating as you get towards 50, it’s a minefield. Everyone my age that I meet has their own baggage and always, more often than not, there will be children and ex partners and living in different locations and all that stuff to deal with. “It’s not as straightforward as when you meet someone in a pub at 25 and you grow up together. The app world is not for me. But that’s the way everyone seems to be doing it these days.” Hall isn’t just looking for companionship — “I’m not in a nursing home yet” — but she is acutely aware it’s a harder task later in life to find the excitement she’d welcome. “Certainly, what you look for in a relationship as you get older is very different,” she says. “I can’t have any more children and I’m not looking at family issues anymore. The pool is smaller the older you get. “I certainly think my romantic life hasn’t panned out as I had expected it to in my late 30s but, look, it is what it is, essentially. I’m very happy in my own company and very happy as a solo player at this point.” Hall’s priority has always been her daughter, Lucia, who is in Year 12 and is on the verge of adulthood at 17. She endured a very public breakup with Lucia’s father, actor Vince Colosimo, about 12 years ago when she was joining the cast of Neighbours. They were together for 12 years and single parenthood has not been easy, but the duo have found a happy medium for co-parenting. She says they are genuinely good mates. “I wouldn’t say we have it down pat but we have our own version of it,” Hall says. “My journey through navigating that sort of stuff has meant I have a really open mind and I don’t judge anyone by their parenting choices. I feel there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to how families work. And we’ve just tried to keep to a model that works for us. Then again, my daughter is nearly 18. “I think the early years were quite challenging and now she’s much more independent and so she’ll, to some degree, be running her own race and you just have to keep loving them through that.” Lucia isn’t sure yet what career path she wants to pursue. “She’s got a few ideas but I really feel like we put so much pressure on them to know what they want to do at this juncture and it’s a bit unrealistic,” Hall says. “Most kids don’t know where they want to go after school. We’ve got to support them regardless and make sure they know they’ve got options. “(Acting) is not on her radar, to be honest. She’s a beautiful girl inside and out.” Hall had consistent work before and through Lucia’s upbringing — from The Henderson Kids and A Country Practice, where she met Colosimo, through to a long-running role on Neighbours and on Melbourne radio as one half of Chrissie & Jane, with Chrissie Swan, from 2012-14. But her latest job on Wentworth has been the icing on the cake. Playing Ann Reynolds, the new hardline general manager of Wentworth Prison, has been her dream job. So much so that she put her midwifery studies on hold to focus on the Foxtel series, which is airing now and will sign off next year during its eighth and final season. “Working on Wentworth is not for the faint-hearted; you have to bring your A-game every day,” Hall says. “The cast are the very best at what they do and the crew also are incredibly skilled. So you get a sense you are joining a very established and creatively very focused project. “I really am flexing my muscles and feel like I’m completely on my toes every day I come to work. You can’t phone this job in. You’ve really got to be present and accountable and do your preparation.” I’ve just absolutely relished that and my character is incredibly complex and full of contradictions and she’s tough as nails and will basically crawl over anyone in her path and she literally takes no prisoners.” “A very uncompromising sort of woman but a very mixed up one as well. She’s great, really great. I love Ann but that’s because I’m trying to see every facet of her, but broadly speaking she’s a fairly objectionable character.” The prison drama is still filming with COVID-19 restrictions, and every actor on set speaks about the show with the same joyful enthusiasm as Hall. “I feel so fortunate this production has been able to continue,” Hall says. “I had weeks where I didn’t work and thought it was done and dusted for me. I didn’t mind how long it stretched out because this has been the job of a lifetime for me. I know the industry is really struggling and trying to get back on its feet. “I don’t know what the landscape of acting will really look like beyond this pandemic.” “We’ve just been cut off at the knees and the fact that no one in my industry was able to get JobKeeper and there are a whole lot of political issues I don’t want to comment on, but it seems to be a grave oversight there. A lot have been without work and my heart goes out to every one of them.” The 49-year-old will eventually return to her midwifery studies when it’s practical to get hands-on experience in a hospital. She decided on the profession three years ago as she’s always had an affinity with it. “I was undertaking a maternity placement (at Royal Women’s Hospital in Sandringham) and I felt incredibly connected to the material,’’ she says. “I’ve always been interested in midwifery and it’s a long-held dream. “You can’t wait for the perfect time; it’s like having a baby, you’ve just got to jump in and do it.” Hall says university has changed a lot since she first studied fashion at RMIT in 1989. “I’ve got my eyes on the prize and it’s going to be the world’s longest degree but I’m looking forward to getting back into it,” Hall says. “I’m in my third year of study, but really, I’ve only completed a year-and-a-half of the degree. It’s a bit of a moving feast but it always is for mature-age students trying to work as well. I’ve certainly noticed that my deficit with learning is technical. “Going into a university now is very different to 1989 when I was in it the first time. I don’t really understand how to work computers and do research like people who have grown up with technology. But you can always teach an old dog new tricks. I didn’t finish that fashion degree so I’ve got to make good on this one. “I’ve always had a really diverse range of interests and have been very creative as well as enjoying more academic study. I just reckon there isn’t anything I won’t have a crack at. If all goes to plan, Hall will work as both an actor and a midwife. She loved her stint in radio and hasn’t given up on the prospect of doing more, but says her heart lies in acting. She is on the “homestretch” as a parent and is spending a lot more time on the Bellarine Peninsula and would love to eventually live by the sea. But she knows as she approaches 50 she has to grab every opportunity with both hands. “The thing about being an actor, I’m nearly 50 now and moving forward into my 50s and 60s, you have to accept there isn’t going to be the same amount of work available as for a woman in their 20s or 30s,’’ she says. “I’ve always had in the back of my head that the second part of my working life would be a bit different and that I could have work to dip in and out of, and I could still work as a performer as well. That’s in my DNA.” “A perfect world for me would be to enjoy both careers concurrently.” Wentworth airs tomorrow at 6.30pm on FOX Showcase.
