Perth loves debating where to find the city’s best cinnamon scroll. Every few months another bakery enters the conversation, social media declares a new champion, and queues inevitably follow.
I’d heard amazing things about Smidge Bakery in Leederville, and finally got to try it recently.
The bakery is surprisingly big, with plenty of seating options including small tables around the perimeter of the shop, and bigger ones at the back. We found a cosy corner seat right by the window. I couldn’t help but feel like the main character in a rom-com.
Walking up to the cabinet, we knew we had to try their cinnamon scrolls but they also had so many other sweet treat options, from cookies in every flavour to brownies and banana bread. I’m glad they had mini options so we could try a bit of everything.
The mini cinny ($5) was a bomb of cinnamon. It had a delicious silky cream cheese icing, but was a little crunchier, not so doughy. The texture could be because of the smaller size, so I would love to try the big one next time.
What really blew me away was the salted Caramilk cookie ($5). There’s a sign outside that says best cinny scrolls, but after one bite, I was convinced they should be advertising Perth’s best cookie instead. It was crisp and crackly on the outside; and soft, extra chewy and buttery on the inside. The flakes of salt made it dangerously addictive and balanced out the sweetness of the Caramilk.
The Biscoff banana bread ($8) with a hot cup of mocha ($7) is a lethal combo. The banana bread was not overly sweet, and the Biscoff lent a subtle caramel warmth, without stealing the show.
The kitchen handles savoury items just as well. We tried the chilli scrambled eggs ($20.50), which was a very decent serving with two slices of toast and a dome of fluffy eggs. The chilli scramble was quite unique because the eggs had almost a souffle texture. And the crunchy chilli oil and dill made an irresistible combo.
Smidge Bakery is easy to recommend. It’s cute, comfortable, and the treats speak for themselves. Sometimes a cookie and a corner seat are all I need to make life just that smidge better.
