Screen Queen TV reviews: Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen, The Comeback, Homebodies & Detective Hole
Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen
Streaming now on Netflix
Something very bad is going to happen: that’s the name of Netflix’s latest must-see drama. It’s also a presupposition that’s been playing on a loop in my head for the past few weeks. I can’t be the only one who feels as though we’re sleepwalking into something bad, or that dark clouds are somehow circling?
You only have to look at the state of the world and our social media news feeds to know things ain’t right: it’s bad news, heaped on bad news, heaped on bad news.
This mood is infused into every episode of this eight-part drama, from Stranger Things EPs the Duffer brothers, and it’s making it a difficult watch — my nerves are shot!
For the uninitiated, this “psychological horror” is set in the four-day lead-up to Rachel (Camila Morrone) and Nicky’s (Adam DiMarco) wedding. The couple has travelled back to Nicky’s family’s remote cabin in the woods for the intimate ceremony. Rachel meets her fiance’s creepy-as-all-get-out relatives for the first time, and weird stuff starts happening almost immediately. Things get steadily more unsettling, and more unhinged, from there.
Rachel has no idea what she is getting herself into by saying “I do” to a man she barely knows. But is said “terrible thing” something supernatural or is her dread more metaphysical? Is Rachel actually unravelling at the thought of stepping into a lifetime commitment with Nicky? Is marriage itself the terrible thing?
This is one of the most interesting shows I’ve seen in a long time — it’s also absolutely TERRIBLE for my already shattered nervous system.
I’m not quite sure what is more horrifying: the world right now or this unsettling eight-ep drama?
Let’s face it: they’re both truly terrifying.
The Comeback
Streaming now on HBO Max
When this long-running series premiered in 2005 it wasn’t really a hit. Twenty-five years and three season later, filmed over three separate decades, and it’s now one of this year’s most anticipated returns.
Season three — the show’s last — sees Lisa Kudrow return as faded sitcom star Valerie Cherish. She’s getting yet another shot at a comeback, this time courtesy of a show written by AI.
It’s a fun conceit, especially as no one is supposed to know that the writers behind it are using tech to finesse their scripts.
This show is genuinely beloved, and fans won’t be disappointed with how it all plays out.
Jo Nesbo’s Detective Hole
Streaming now on Netflix
Is this show about Jo Nesbo’s detective hole? And what, exactly, is that? Terrible title notwithstanding, I’ll be checking out this small-screen adaptation of the Norwegian crime writer’s acclaimed novels, which are all about a police detective named . . . Harry Hole. Nordic crime fans, you won’t want to miss this one.
Homebodies
Saturday, 8.30pm, SBS and On Demand
This is all about a young trans man called Darcy (Luke Wiltshire) who returns home to care for his mum (Claudia Karvan), only to discover she’s been secretly living with the pre-transition ghost of his former teenage self. A strange premise, but a story packed with heart. Definitely worth a look.
Your Friends & Neighbours S2
Friday, streaming on Apple TV Plus
Jon Hamm is back as Coop, everyone’s favourite friendly neighbourhood thief. This season he’s doubling down on his life of crime, but a new neighbour is threatening to undo all his hard work. This has already been renewed for season three, so settle in and enjoy the ride.
