Albany Town Hall one of 15 sites across country to shine pillar of light for Bondi National Day of Mourning

A beam of bright light will be projected into the sky from Albany Town Hall at dusk tonight as part of the National Day of Mourning commemorating the victims of the Bondi Beach terrorist attack. The white light, which is set to shoot from the York Street building between 7pm to 8pm when the sun has set, will remain shining until midnight. The town hall is one of 15 landmarks across the country, and the only one in regional WA, selected to contribute as part of the Federal Government’s 15 Pillars of Light initiative, honouring the 15 victims who tragically lost their lives in the shooting on December 14 last year. The Australian flag atop the hall and at the City of Albany’s administration buildings will remain at half mast all day as a mark of respect. WA Premier Roger Cook said that, alongside the official WA locations — Albany Town Hall and Parliament House — other monuments, including Optus Stadium, Matagarup Bridge, and the Graham Farmer Freeway Tunnel, would also be lit up in white. “Today is a chance for all Western Australians to reflect and recognise the impact of this tragedy and stand in solidarity with the Jewish community,” he said. “It is also a time to come together and consider our collective role in ensuring every Western Australian feels supported and safe. “There is no place in Australia for anti-Semitism. It will not be tolerated in WA, and we will use every tactic and measure at our disposal to protect the community.” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the nationwide light installation will serve as a “visible symbol of mourning, remembrance, and national unity.” West Australians are invited to observe a minutes silence at 4.01pm to remember the 15 victims of the massacre.
