Albany’s annual Free Community Christmas Luncheon set to welcome hundreds to the table on Christmas Day

Albany’s annual Free Community Christmas Luncheon is set to take over the Albany Agricultural Society’s western pavilion on Christmas Day, with long-time hosts Steve and Karen Marshall welcoming all.
More than 500 people were expected to gather at the pavilion on Thursday to enjoy a free buffet Christmas lunch, with doors opening at midday.
Co-ordinator Mr Marshall said the number of attendees increased every year.
“There are a lot of people in the community who are facing challenges, and that number is not decreasing,” he said.

“We’ve been putting this event on for decades, and we’ve never missed a Christmas since we started.
“It’s something special to be able to bring joy to anyone who may be feeling alone at Christmas time.
“The idea is that for one day, everyone leaves their prejudices at the door, and comes together in this display of community spirit to welcome anyone who comes to the table.
“Everyone has a seat, that’s the real spirit of Christmas, and that’s what we try to do.”
Attendees will be entertained with carols, songs and dance performances from local community groups, and all children under 12 years of age will receive a Christmas present from Santa Claus.
Anyone planning to come along is encouraged to register online through the Free Community Christmas Luncheon website.
Mr Marshall said the event had grown to become one of the biggest of its kind in WA, and had expanded to include volunteers going out to deliver meals to those who cannot attend the lunch in person, including essential workers and emergency services staff.
“We’ve had people come from all around — Augusta, Esperance, Kalgoorlie, and as far up as Perth and Geraldton,” Mr Marshall said.

“Some are in the region on holiday, some are new to the region, and some are spending their first Christmas without loved ones.
“Everyone comes along for a different reason, but there is a seat at the table for everyone.”
