City of Albany commissions $100,000 developer-funded statement artwork in Orana to welcome tourists to Albany

A statement artwork will soon welcome tourists driving into Albany, as the City of Albany seeks professional artists to create the $100,000 entrance piece that will reflect the city’s unique identity. To be located in Orana at the Albany Highway Information Bay, the $100,000 project will be the first artwork to be funded via a city development policy. The policy, Local Planning Policy 1.10 — Percent for Art, requires developers helming projects valued at $1.5 million or more to contribute up to one per cent of their total project cost toward public artwork. Expressions of interest are open to professional artists living in the Great Southern region, or with a strong connection to Albany. Artists can apply as individually or part of a team and collaborations with emerging or First Nations artists are encouraged. City arts and culture manager Paul Nielsen said the project marks an important milestone for Albany. “This is the first time Percent for Art contributions have come together to fund a major artwork for Albany,” he said. “The policy ensures that growth and development also invest in culture and connection. “This first commission will support a local artist to create a striking artwork that is also an entrance statement for visitors.” Located between Coogee Street and Anson Road in Orana, the project site includes a big grassed area where the artwork will be displayed and a covered bay providing visitor maps and information.
