Dozens of crews battle warehouse fire at vineyard near Albany as dangerous smoke causes nearby hazmat warning

Firefighters have rushed to a warehouse fire at a vineyard near Albany on Thursday, the blaze engulfing half the building when crews arrived at the scene. The incident has sparked a hazmat warning for Walmsley and Warrenup in the City of Albany, with dangerous smoke blowing north-easterly across Chester Pass Road near Greatrex Road. A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said the structure fire was reported at about 4pm on Thursday afternoon, with 12 crews dispatched. The fire was reported to be about 200sqm in size and at about 4.10pm the blaze had engulfed 50 percent of the shed according to DFES. The building contained fertiliser, which prompted the hazmat alert, and DFES said the fire was contained but not controlled by 4.25pm. Career firefighters and volunteer bushfire crew from Albany, Denmark, Highway and King River were called to the blaze. The fire is at the property of the recently closed Wignalls Winery. Crews remained were still at the scene at 5pm to get the fire under control and make the area safe. More to come.
