First appearance in Albany Magistrates Court for man accused of possessing child exploitation material

A 65-year-old man has faced court for the first time accused of possessing child exploitation material in Albany last month. Darrell Shane Spry appeared in Albany Magistrates Court on Thursday, charged with one count of possessing child exploitation material. The charge allegedly occurred on May 28 in Yakamia. In the brief first hearing Mr Spry, who represented himself in the appearance, was asked by Magistrate Erin O’Donnell if he understood the charge. “I’m not quite sure your honour,” Mr Spry said in response. Ms O’Donnell then explained the charge related to images of children under the age of 16 of a sexual nature and Mr Spry said he understood. Ms O’Donnell told Mr Spry the charge is indictable and must be dealt with in the District Court, and recommended he seek legal advice. Bail was extended for Mr Spry, which includes strict conditions and a $1000 personal undertaking. Some of those conditions include Mr Spry cannot leave WA, cannot carry out any child-related work, and must provide police with his electronic devices upon request. Mr Spry will next appear in Albany Magistrates Court on July 17 for legal advice.
