GSSA 2024: Men’s division one pacesetters Caledonians survive scare, wins for women’s division one top teams

A second-half fightback from Polonia forced Rovers Gold to share the points in round nine of the Great Southern Soccer Association men’s division two competition on Saturday.

Second-placed Polonia were given an almighty scare from their opponents after entering half time a goal down before late heroics from Cole McKee and Dylan Burrow lifted them to the 2-2 result.

Ladder leaders Rovers Black secured a commanding 8-0 victory meanwhile in the other division two fixture, Phoenix beat Caledonians 2-1.

In the men’s division one results, Caledonians overcame a sluggish start to register a resounding 5-2 victory over Phoenix, to stay clear on top of the ladder.

Phoenix entered half time in the box seat to secure a stunning upset, leading the ladder-toppers 2-1 courtesy of goals from Corey Plug and Jaymon Spaanderman.

However, the league leaders proved their superiority, netting four second-half goals to snatch victory, Gury Shaw and Hudson Staer each netted braces in the comeback win.

Rovers’ hot streak continued on Saturday after notching their sixth straight victory after handing Bayswater a 4-1 defeat with goal contributions from Bradley Chapman, Joseph Iarel and Justin Bielecki.

Daniel Azimi was the only goalscorer for Bayswater.

In the final match of the round, Polonia bounced back from last week’s heavy defeat at the hands of Phoenix, with a strong 4-1 win over Stirling Rangers courtesy of a Kai Thrupp-Pobst brace.

The top three of the women’s division one competition all recorded victories on Friday evening, extending their gap ahead of the chasing pack after nine rounds.

Denmark thrashed Polonia 12-0 with hat-tricks from Abby Carter and Lumeah Masih and Mt Barker defeated Phoenix 4-0 thanks to a Libby Morris hat-trick.

A Shelley Thompson finish was all that could separate Caledonians and Rovers, Caledonians notching a 1-0 win.

In the women’s division two on Friday night, Phoenix powered to an 11-0 rout over Caledonians, Denmark Rezzies thumped Rovers 10-0 and Sharks beat Mt Barker 6-1.
