Albany Caledonian took advantage of Polonia’s bye to go four points clear of their rivals at the top of the Great Southern Soccer Association senior men’s ladder on Saturday.
They notched their sixth win from eight outings with a 5-1 victory over Rovers.
While defending champions Calies racked up another triumph, there were celebrations at Bayswater as the basement side held Phoenix to a 0-0 draw to claim their first point in two seasons.
Andreas Bouzinekis notched his ninth goal of the season to put Rovers ahead with a 32nd-minute penalty but that was as good as it got as Calies were level seven minutes later and accelerated away from there.
Riley Marsh grabbed the equaliser to make it 1-1 at half-time but then Douglas Grant put Calies ahead with a strike from the spot just short of the hour.
Chris Wallace scored the first of his treble as Calies pushed forward and added two more late in the day to complete the rout.
Bayswater’s scorelines have not always reflected their performances as they have been prone to collapsing after making promising starts.
On Saturday, however, they held out to draw 0-0 with Phoenix for their first point of the campaign, having remained pointless throughout the whole of last season.
In the men’s reserves’ competition, Polonia and Phoenix shared the spoils 1-1 while Rovers lost 1-0 to Calies.
Calies lead the table by one point from Polonia with the sides due to meet on Saturday.
Polonia went ahead against Phoenix when Sebastian Siemiginowski fired home on the hour, but Vaughn Schoof levelled from the penalty spot in the 76th minute.
A goal from Dylan Cook in the 65th minute wrapped up the points for Calies against Rovers.
There were masters’ wins for Old Boys, Phoenix and Denmark on July 23 while Polonia, Sharks and Denmark were triumphant in the socials’ competition the previous night.
There were no senior women’s league fixtures last weekend where Calies are dominating the competition and are six points clear of Phoenix.
Calies are back in action on Saturday against lowly Sharks, while Rovers tackle Denmark and Polonia face Phoenix in the other games.
