Late fourth quarter surge not enough for Boxwood Hill as Newdegate win three-point thriller in OFA

Newdegate won a thrilling three-point contest against Boxwood Hill on Saturday at Newdegate to stay in touch with the top two on the Ongerup Football Association ladder.

Despite an exhilarating three-goal last-term comeback from Boxwood, the Lions rallied late to boot a much-needed major in the fourth quarter to secure their second win of the year, 8.7 (55) to 7.10 (52).

The Lions were on top for most of the contest, kicking seven goals in the first half to open up a comfortable 22-point advantage heading into the second half.

The persistent Boxwood responded with determination, holding the home side scoreless in the third quarter while kicking one of their own to bring them within 16 points with one quarter left.

The Lions were shaken as Boxwood looked set to complete an unlikely comeback but they were left to lament a lacklustre first-half as a singular Lions goal proved enough to see them get over the line.

Dean Rintoul, pictured, Nelson Kent and David Newman were all brilliant for the winning side while Edward Moir, Hayden Richter and George Bungey toiled hard for the Bombers in the tight contest.

Dylan Brooks snagged two majors for the Lions while Jack Davis (two goals) and Shane Davy (two goals) were were the main goal kickers for visitors.

Meanwhile Jerramungup slumped to their fourth loss of the season, following a 101-point defeat at the hands of Lake Grace-Pingrup in the other league fixture on Saturday.

Jackson Callope and Karl Fleay dominated in the forward-line, kicking four and five goals respectively in the thumping.

Jack Carruthers, Will Cook and Tyson Prater were all terrific for the winners.

Aaron Winters and Tate Barrett fought courageously against their dominant opposition in the loss but ultimately went down 5.7 (37) to 21.12 (138).
