Passion for the moment drives photo ace Bob Symons and Albany’s Ace Camera Club

Albany photographer Bob Symons is passionate about telling stories through a camera lens — something he didn’t realise he had a knack for until later in life. A founding member of the Ace Camera Club, Symons is an experienced photographer with a range of knowledge in various photography techniques and skills. Speaking to Inspire from the club’s headquarters at Vancouver Arts Centre, Symons opened up about the club and his love for the art. Originally from New Zealand, Symons spent time living in Perth before moving to Albany about nine years ago. “When I retired I came to the best place in the world, best people too,” he said. Studying photography at TAFE in his home country, Symons also completed courses conducted by WA master photographer Dale Neill. His love for photography stemmed from when he was child. “First thing, I started off with a Kodak Cresta I got for Christmas. I opened up the bag and there was this yellow box — I thought, ‘This is fabulous’,” he said. “I didn’t realise at the time but when I look back I was going around telling stories and that’s what I’m interested in. “I got a Meccano set for another Christmas or birthday and started making stuff. The creative side comes out of combining the two and I think that’s how it’s been ever since.” The Ace Camera Club started in 2013 under the tag the Albany Film Users Group. “It was a very small group of film enthusiasts who only used film and digital was a dirty word,” Symons said. It was after the group struggled to gain membership that they decided to change the name and open it up to anyone. “We didn’t want to be in a group with many rules, so we opened it up and let people create stuff,” Symons said. “We are a nice friendly social group rather than a competitive individual group.” Symons described himself as an “ambusher” behind the lens. “You see the shot and you grab it. You’ve got to be able to predict them, be focused and ready to go as soon as you see that moment, that split second. That’s my technique,” he said. An avid portrait photographer, Symons recounted one of his most memorable images of a well known homeless man in Albany — captured just weeks before he was found dead inside public toilets. The body of Milorad Djukanovic, known as Mick, was found in April 2015. “We had the Great Southern Radiology building as a clubroom and Mick slept at the stairs at the back entrance,” Symons said. “He got friendly with us, he’d come in and have a cup of tea... I met him in a park one day and said ‘I really want to photograph you’. “I got some good shots of him, a couple of weeks later he was found dead.” Mick’s son Milenko Djukanovic, who lives in Bosnia and never met his father, reached out to the Albany Advertiser, police and homeless services at the time in a bid to build a picture of a man he never knew. “His son tracked him down and asked people in Albany to provide him with information. I had that photo. The son was pleased to have a photo of his father just before he died,” Symons said. “That’s where I think photography does something really good. It’s those sorts of stories that make photography interesting. “You try to do something with your photos and help to give something back.” Symons and his fellow club members are also working to keep other forms of photography alive inside a heritage-listed Albany morgue turned darkroom. Complete with red lights and no windows, the former morgue — located on the Albany Cottage Hospital site — has been transformed by the club. “It’s spooky, one lady wouldn’t come in the door because she reckons it was haunted,” he said. In a facility where bodies once lay, work benches have been repurposed for photographers to process and develop images. With about 50 members in the Ace Camera Club, Symons said he hoped to attract some younger faces. “There is such an amount of experience in the club. I’d hate to think that might never be passed on,” he said. “It’s important we encourage young people to get involved.”
