Star Albany galloper Red Can Man no match for Graceful Girl in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes

Star Albany galloper Red Can Man finished unplaced in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot on Saturday after he was no match for impressive winner Graceful Girl.

Red Can Man jumped on the fourth line of betting on TABtouch for trainer Steve Wolfe but failed to let down strongly in the straight and faded to run seventh.

Graceful Girl stormed home from last at the top of the straight to claim victory by a big margin for champion hoop William Pike.

Jumping from barrier 10 in the field of 16, Red Can Man had to be mustered for speed early by jockey Shaun McGruddy after making contact with the barrier on jumping.

However, McGruddy settled the five-year-old gelding into a terrific spot in running but he wasn’t able to produce a strong turn of foot and went down by six lengths.

Despite not winning a race on day two of the masters carnival, Wolfe had some strong placings.

Promising three-year-old Beads ran second beaten by half length for McGruddy in the opening event by The Front Bar.

Classic Rogue finished strongly in the straight in the $100,000 TABtouch Westspeed Platinum Series Final (1400m) to run third behind Nowhiteflag.

Mr Mt Walker ran fourth in the Crown Towers Handicap (1400m), going down by four lengths to Albany-owned God Has Chosen.

God Has Chosen won its fourth race in seven career starts after being sent out a short-priced favourite with Pike aboard.

The Playing God gelding was a brilliant winner of his first two starts for then trainer Neil Lee.
