A class of Year 6 children have been working hard to give comfort to young people in Albany who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

The students at Parklands School have knitted 17 blankets for Young House, which they presented yesterday to Albany Youth Support Association’s Ricky Burges.

Their teacher, Cath Hodgkinson, said they chose to donate them to Young House after speaking to a teacher who helped out at Young House.

“The students enjoy knowing that the blankets are for other people who may derive some comfort and cheer from their efforts,” she said. “We also know that Young House helps many young people who need a place to stay and receive support, so we felt it was a very worthwhile cause.”

The task started during distance learning activities amid COVID-19 school closures.

She said the activity had been very rewarding for the students, both in learning motor skills and making them aware of how they could help people.

“When they returned to school, we continued to help them, making granny squares each week,” she said. “We put the call out to the Parklands community and they generously donated yarn and crocheted squares which we have used.”
