A sundowner at the University of Western Australia’s Albany campus was a chance to celebrate the university’s connections with industry and community.
The evening on October 21 recognised the contribution the university’s partners make to the organisation and its students, especially through work integrated learning placements.
The placements provide students with opportunities to apply their learnings to practical situations and gain experience of the professional world.
The event also marked the conclusion of a successful year of UWA’s career mentor link, a flagship program which connects students with industry professionals.
Mentor link co-ordinator Chris Ruffler said mentors from Albany, Perth and beyond had volunteered their time to support students.

“One of the great strengths of the career mentor link is its ability to overcome geography,” he said.
“Albany students can connect with experienced professionals from across Australia and around the world while local businesses gain a meaningful way to support emerging talent and strengthen their links with the wider UWA community.”
The program will celebrate its 25th year of operation in 2027.
UWA’s regional industry and partnerships adviser Michelle Holland said the organisation was always looking for industry and community partners.
“If your organisation has the capacity to host a UWA student for a work integrated learning placement or if you are interested in becoming a mentor, we would love to start a conversation,” she said.
The sundowner was a chance to thank the businesses and individuals who had contributed to both programs, she added.
It was also an opportunity for students and potential employers to make contact and enjoy an evening of networking.
