Numbers gamefor new officer
The Geraldton Hockey Association has appointed Brent Allen as their development officer for 2015.
Allen replaces Ronan Croft who was in the position for a year but decided not to re-apply.
The 27-year-old firefighter has been playing hockey for more than 20 years and said he was looking forward to the role.
He said his priorities would be getting more kids into the sport and developing juniors.
“I want to get more numbers in the sub-juniors, and also retain those kids into club level, ” he said.
“Further to that, I want to work on transitions.
“Transitioning from primary school level to club level, and again from high school level going to seniors.”
Association director Geoff Wood said the board was excited to be appointing Allen.
Wood said Allen was a product of the Geraldton system and understood it well.
“Being part of the system, not coming from outside, that familiarity makes it easier for him to adapt to the role, ” he said.
“We think he’ll do a great job.
“He’s got good social skills so he’ll get on well with the kids.”
The position is part-time and Allen will work about 25 hours a week.
Allen said hockey was an important sport in the region.
“It’s very important for the health and development of young kids, ” he said.
“Team sports are very important in developing a whole range of skills.”
Allen said he hoped to be a part of the sport’s continued success. “We have some pretty talented young guys in town, ” he said.
“We have a Mid West Hockey Academy.
“The idea of that is to develop the kids with elite potential, and try to help them realise where they can get to.” To get involved with hockey, call the association on 9956 2185.
