Bombers still on top after round four
The Bombers remain at the top of the Broome Basketball Assocation’s men’s A-grade standings after a tight win against Gantheaume Pointers at the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre on September 24.
The Bombers drew first blood but the Pointers responded quickly with three baskets from Tom Schorer, pushing them briefly into the lead before Lachlan Walley and Chris Hunter scored three baskets for the Bombers to secure a six-point lead, 15 to 9.
The Pointers sunk the first three baskets of the second term, and again edged to the lead thanks to efforts from Dimitri Boulestreau in attack.
But the Bombers snatched it back in the final two minutes of the term with baskets from Julian Cox, Hunter and Walley, and led 22 to 20.
The Bombers extended their lead by claiming the first four baskets of the third before the Pointers defence tightened up and slowed their pace, but the Bombers were still seven points ahead going into the final quarter, 37 to 30.
The Pointers managed to sink six baskets in the final term but it wasn’t enough to catch the Bombers who added another 13 points to secure the win, 50-43.
Pointer Timothy Jones and Bomber Lachlan Walley tied for top scorer of the match on 12 points each.
Elsewhere the MP Boys recorded a solid win over the Tigers in a one-sided affair.
It was a slow first quarter with the Tigers failing to score and the MP Boys sinking four baskets to claim the early lead, 8-0.
The Tigers got into the game in the second quarter with Jarman Cox leading the charge, sinking the first four baskets for the Tigers. But the MP Boys kept their lead with five baskets of their own.
Cox once again led the charge for the Tigers claiming, the first basket of the third quarter and was backed by Taryce Stewart who sunk three baskets, bringing the Tigers within reach of the MP Boys.
But the MP Boys pulled out all the stops in the final quarter, sinking nine baskets, while the Tigers only managed to sink four. MP Boys won 48-34.
Despite the loss, Jarman Cox was the top scorer of the match on 17 points.
In the social men’s competition, the Hornets took down the Misfits by 16 points, 52-36. The Hornets’ Kobe Corpus was the top scorer with 18 points.
Bayside defeated Spoonbills in a tight match, 49-44. Bayside’s Tyron Cox was the top scorer with 14 points.
Peninsula Bombers claimed the win over the Cobras, 50-38. Bomber Reubeyus Cox was the top scorer with 16 points.
Broome Best Cleaning Services defeated the Saints 52-36. Despite the loss, Saint Pascal King was the top scorer with 18 points.
In the women’s competition, Lady Nets defeated Basket Casers, 54-38. Lady Nets’ Melynd Hunter was the top scorer with 15 points.
The Raiders, Drifters and Lady Tigers had a bye this week but return to the competition on October 15.
