Tennis Pennant Competition serves up a return to Broome Tennis Club
Broome Tennis Club is back in full swing with the long-awaited return of its pennant competition, marking a fresh chapter for the club after years focused primarily on social play.
The new competition, which launched in June, features six teams of three players competing each Thursday evening over six weeks.
Players rotate through two doubles matches and one singles match, bringing a touch of friendly rivalry back to the courts.
Club president Fiona Sharpe said the pennant competition had been missing from the club’s calendar for some time, despite social tennis remaining popular.
“Adult social tennis has been the main activity for several years now, which still suits a lot of people,” Ms Sharpe said.
“However, there has always been this niggling desire to get a competition format up and going again. Thanks to the keen interest, motivation and experience of committee members Paul and Christine Sarabillo, Wade Reid and Sara Garrido Diaz, it is now up and running.”
The club has been buzzing with activity, not just on the tennis front.
Pickleball — a fast-growing sport combining elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis — has also taken off in Broome, with club committee members Lynette and Keith Engelbrecht championing the game locally.
“We’re seeing a few of our older junior development kids coming through from coaching programs and joining our social tennis and pickleball nights, and the new tennis pennant competition, which is ultimately the aim of the game,” Ms Sharpe said.
With junior tennis coaching, social tennis, the revived pennant competition and pickleball all on offer, Broome Tennis Club is more active than ever.
Ms Sharpe encouraged anyone keen to give it a go to head down to the courts from Monday to Thursday evenings at 6pm.
“For kids’ coaching information, visit the Broome Tennis Club Facebook page,” she said. “Following this first six-week tennis pennant competition, we’ll be advertising another round, so watch this space.”
