Lives and homes are under threat by two bushfires that became out of control and unpredictable in Geraldton and Beechina in the Shire of Mundaring late this afternoon.

An emergency warning was issued residents at 5.43pm in the Geraldton suburb of Wonthella, telling those who live between Central Road and Flores Road it is too late to leave their homes.

“You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive,” the warning said.

“There is a threat to lives and homes.

“Homes in this area are under threat by fire now.”

More than 100 volunteer and career firefighters — supported by water bombers — are battling a blaze in Beechina, about 50 km east of Perth.

The blaze was ignited by a car fire.

An evacuation centre has been set up at 50 Mundaring Weir Road, Mundaring by the Department of Communities.

The warnings come as firefighters continue to battle a Red Gully bushfire raging towards old explosives surrounding Wedge Island.

Mainland Wedge Island is at high risk of fire threat as firefighters are unable to enter the perimeter due to unexploded ordinances from the old Lancelin bombing range surrounding the settlement.

The fire — which has been ablaze since Saturday — has burnt through 7200 hectares of land and has a 50km perimeter.

The bushfire is moving fast in a westerly direction.

If you live between Central Road and Flores Road in Wonthella, it is not safe to leave.

You need to shelter in your home in a room away from the fire front and make sure you can easily escape.

You must shelter before the fire arrives, as the extreme heat will kill you well before the flames reach you.

Close all doors and windows and turn off evaporative air conditioners, but keep water running through the system if possible.

Choose a room with two exits and water such as a kitchen or laundry.

If your home catches on fire and the conditions inside become unbearable, you need to get out and go to an area that has already been burnt.

Protect yourself by wearing long sleeves and trousers, made from cotton or wool, and strong leather boots.

If you live between North West Coast Highway and Central Road it is safe to leave away from the fire.

Do not wait and see, leave too late can be deadly.
