Geraldton man Wayne Bradley Oxenham jailed over attack on pregnant partner

A Geraldton man who repeatedly kicked his pregnant partner in the stomach outside a Rangeway church has been jailed. Wayne Bradley Oxenham, 32, was sentenced to two years and three months in prison at Geraldton Magistrate’s Court on Monday for charges relating to the assault of his partner and breaching a violence restraining order. Oxenham appeared via video link from Greenough Prison as the court was told details of an altercation between him and his pregnant partner at Sun City Christian Centre on November 11, 2019. Oxenham was in breach of a police order preventing him from seeing his partner when he tried to encourage the woman to leave the premises with him. The court was told the woman tried to walk away when Oxenham threatened her with a pair of scissors and fell to the ground after he hit her in the back of the head. Oxenham proceeded to kick her in the stomach. He was later arrested and remanded in custody on charges including common assault and threats to injure, endanger or harm any person. Mr Oxenham assaulted his partner a second time while the woman was walking to a Rangeway deli three weeks after the first incident. The court heard Mr Oxenham repeatedly breached the violence order by making phone calls while in custody to his partner’s sister, during which he would ask to speak to the woman protected by the order. His lawyer told the court said Mr Oxenham had not reoffended in a “like matter” since the assaults in February 2019 and he was eager to “improve the relationship with his partner for the sake of his children”. Magistrate Chris Miocevich told Mr Oxenham he was “not going to be there for (his) children” if he did not make serious changes to his lifestyle once he was released from prison. Mr Oxenham’s prison term was backdated to April 6, 2020 and he will be eligible for parole.
