Coodanup: Man charged over alleged hit and run that seriously injured 20-year-old pedestrian
A man driving on a suspended license has been charged over a hit and run in Mandurah that left a 20-year-old fighting for his life, with police alleging the car was “deliberately” driven towards the victim.
Police commissioner Col Blanch said detectives were investigating if the accused driver and victim, Ty-kai Yarran, were known to each other following the incident on Steerforth Drive, Coodanup, on Monday night.
Detectives allege a 37-year-old man driving a white Hyundai Getz hatchback deliberately struck Mr Yarran as he walked on Steerforth Drive about 9.30pm.
The driver allegedly fled the scene and failed to report the incident, leaving the young man with life-threatening injuries.
The family of the victim said the incident happened outside their family home, with Mr Yarran’s friends immediately rushing to his aid after the driver fled.
His sister, Loretta Phillips, told 7NEWS the family was “still in shock”.
“(We are) just praying and sticking together as a family to make sure that he’s OK, just supporting one another,” she said.
His grandmother, Melinda Miller, said Mr Yarran is a “beautiful young man”.
“He means the world to me, my grandson.”
St John WA reportedly arrived 13 minutes after the incident, before the victim was rushed to Peel Health Campus. He was later flown to Royal Perth Hospital.
A spokesman for the hospital said he was in a critical condition in the intensive care unit on Tuesday afternoon.
Mandurah detectives have charged the alleged driver, from Dudley park, with four offences including with intent to harm, did an act causing bodily harm.
Police allege he was driving on a suspended license, failed to report the incident and fled the scene.
The Hyundai has been seized by police.
The accused driver will face the Perth Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
