Death in custody: Aboriginal man collapses and dies while playing basketball at Greenough Regional Prison

An Aboriginal man has died in a prison near Geraldton, the second death in custody to rock WA’s justice system in just days. The 45-year-old man collapsed while playing basketball and was later declared dead by paramedics at the Greenough Regional Prison on Tuesday. He collapsed at about 4.35pm, according to the Justice Department. “Prison officers and medical staff provided first aid to the man before an ambulance arrived,” Justice said in a short statement released on Wednesday. “Paramedics declared him deceased at the prison.” WA Police will prepare a report for the Coroner. Fourteen people have now died in the custody of WA’s justice system since the start of 2022. The man’s death comes only days after an Aboriginal woman died on Christmas Eve following a “medical event” at Wandoo Rehabilitation Prison that occurred on December 21. The woman had been on life support at Fiona Stanley Hospital since the event occurred, where her family were able to visit her prior to her passing. “I wish to offer my condolences to the family at this difficult time,” Commissioner for Corrective Services Mike Reynolds said. “I trust they took some comfort in being able to say their goodbyes.”
