George Marrogi: Jailed Notorious Crime Family boss’ sentence extended for ‘quick but brutal’ prison attack

Jailed gangland boss George Marrogi has had his decades-long prison sentence extended by one month for a “quick but brutal” attack on a prison officer. Marrogi, 36, faced the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday afternoon where he pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer on February 25 last year at the Metropolitan Remand Centre. The head of a crime syndicate, known as the “Notorious Crime Family”, Marrogi is serving decades in prison for the murder of Kadir Ors in 2016 and running a drug importation empire from behind bars. Part of a CCTV clip of the attack was played in court, but it stopped short of showing the assault after Marrogi complained he could not see the footage. Seven officers, several wearing face shields, could be seen lining up in an interstitial space before a locked door is opened and Marrogi is grabbed by an officer. In a summary of the offending read to the court and accepted by Marrogi, the officers were planning to move the convicted killer when he lashed out, kicking an officer in the chest. According to prosecutors, the officer was thrown about a metre and a half backwards into a wall and suffered a minimally displaced fracture of his right fifth rib. “Due to the violent nature of the accused he has not been interviewed in relation to the matter,” a police prosecutor said. Daniel Georgiou, Marrogi’s lawyer, told the court his client has spent much of his time behind bars in solitary confinement with “no access to open air”. “He is given no meaningful interaction with other humans,” he said. He said Marrogi has a case against prison officials in the Supreme Court over his grievances behind bars, describing this as a more positive outlet than violence. “This lash out occurred during a dispute he was having about how many family visits he was allowed to have,” Mr Georgiou said. One of the nation’s most uncontrollable inmates is on a hunger strike until he gets a greater choice of meals. Convicted murderer and drug trafficker George Marrogi has written to Barwon Prison management vowing he will not eat or drink until a stoush over a lack of kosher meal choices is resolved. The court was told Marrogi has a history of continuing to offend behind bars, including several assaults on prison officers and damaging property. Looking at his court record, Magistrate Michelle Hodgson said each of these were dealt with by sentences to be served “concurrently” with his other convictions, meaning no extra time behind bars. “That’s to avoid what we call a crushing sentence,” she said. “You are at that point where this type of conduct will be marked by further periods of imprisonment … It may seem meaningless but it will be marked by further increases in custody.” Marrogi was seen nodding as Ms Hodgson sentenced him to three months jail, with his current sentence to be extended by one month for what she called a “quick but brutal” assault. The court was told the earliest Marrogi will be eligible for parole is the year 2049.
