$90k play funds in party’s plan

Lara Dalton has pledged $90,000 towards children’s play facilities if she becomes the Labor member for Geraldton at the March State Election. She said Wandina Playgroup would receive $50,000 to buy and fit out a sea container to allow for the volunteer group’s ongoing operation and to expand its facilities to cater for growing demand. Ms Dalton also promised the Geraldton Toy Library $40,000 to build a new storage shed and renovate their existing premises. “The current building is in great need of a face lift and requires secure storage for the growing toy collection,” she said. Member for Geraldton Ian Blayney said the toy library needed a better, larger more central premises and the playgroup at Wandina likewise needed suitable premises. “To offer both of them a shipping container is bizarre. Not really at all suitable,” he said. A spokesman for Ms Dalton said the Wandina playgroup was not being offered a sea container, but a new purpose built shed as well as renovations to its existing building. Mr Blayney did not say whether his party would commit to funding these new premises if it could form Government after March 13. Ms Dalton said support for new families and those with very young children was “fundamental” in any community. “Both organisations have a proven track record of delivering for our kids in their early years,” she said. “The Wandina Playgroup is bursting at the seams. “It offers great support to many local families and the extra facilities will give the Wandina Playgroup the capacity to grow.” Ms Dalton said the Toy Library had been operating since 1984. “It is a friendly environment with an amazing range of toys and equipment available to families. It is a fabulous community resource, making play affordable for all families,” she said. Liberals candidate Rob Dines has been contacted for comment.
