The Geraldton Guardian

Geraldton residents made the most of the sunny yet temperate day on Tuesday to celebrate the city’s newest citizens, local legends and our place in the so-called lucky country. But not as many turned out to the “sold-out” event, with pre-registration at no cost required to get a picnic spot at Stow Gardens, most of which were seen empty over the course of the event. The City of Greater Geraldton had attracted criticism online, with residents upset about State Government COVID-19 restrictions limiting event attendees and preventing their spontaneous patronage. City chief executive Ross McKim told the Geraldton Guardian he had dealt with multiple mishaps throughout the day, including the complimentary picnic blankets not arriving and a scheduled act cancelling. Australia Day events began at 3pm with Mayor Shane Van Styn naturalising 26 new Australians. The Geraldton community citizen of the year award was presented to Lisa Bickley for her efforts in keeping the environment rubbish-free.The active citizenship group award was won by Geraldton Dog Rescue; Paul Dodson was named senior of the year; and 10-year-old Lillyan Treasure was the young citizen of the year.Punters enjoyed live music featuring 11-piece cover band Proof and local performances from Soundscapes of the Midwest until 9.30pm, while food trucks were accessible to the general public outside of the gates along the foreshore throughout the day.
