In a move that’s sure to surprise no one locally, global flight aggregator Skyscanner has crowned the Abrolhos Islands as the top destination for an off-the-grid experience in 2021.

Heading a list of eight destinations around the world, travel experts from the site wrote: “For the perfect tonic to a year spent surrounded by four walls, it’s hard to beat the unspoilt crystalline tropical water of The Abrolhos Islands National Park”.

Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said he was “pumped” to see the islands recognised by a global travel company.

“This impressive listing should result in even more visitors exploring the Abrolhos Islands through Geraldton, as well as our epic Australia’s Coral Coast,” he said.

“With this kind of attention, it’s important that investment in the infrastructure required to make the islands accessible to all continues to be made.”

Describing the chain of 122 islands, 60km from Geraldton, as “the Galapagos Islands of the Indian Ocean”, the site points to the pristine natural beauty and biodiversity as being unmatched in Australia.

The islands featured in the company’s 2021 Our Top Trends and Destinations list, which was curated using traveller data and insights to predict soon-to-be trending destinations.
