Alleged Geraldton glassing only “serious” NYE crime

An 18-year-old woman has been charged with unlawful wounding after allegedly glassing another woman on New Years Eve at a Geraldton pub. The pair were attending a New Year’s Eve event at The Freemason Hotel when the Drummond Cove woman allegedly struck the 38-year-old victim from behind with a glass just after midnight. Geraldton Detectives officer in charge Det. Snr. Sgt. Bruce McDonald said witnesses held the accused down before nearby police attended the scene and arrested her. “It was a pretty serious incident which could have resulted in severe injuries or even loss of life,” he said. “Luckily the victim did not sustain any serious injuries and was immediately taken to hospital for treatment. “(New Year’s Eve) was busy for our uniformed officers but nothing serious happened besides this incident.” Inquiries were continuing into the incident and it was not yet established if the women were known to each other. The accused was taken to Geraldton Police Station at about 12.30am for questioning and was later released on bail. She is due to face Geraldton Magistrates Court on January 14.
