Almost 300 entries vie for best in show at Geraldton & Districts Kennel Club’s final event of the year

Hundreds of dogs from all over WA were on their best behaviour as they chased the title of best in show at the Geraldton & Districts Kennel Club’s final event of its 50th anniversary year last month. From bulldogs to shitzus and Maltese to Bernese, dogs of all shapes and sizes were on display, with almost 300 entries from across the State for the October 22 and 23 event. The first show of the weekend, judged by Victorian Lyn Watson, was won by pug Kabova Courage Unda Fire, with German shorthaired pointer Makapoynt Clegane runner-up. The second show, judged by Victorian Julie Keenan, awarded best in show to Newfoundland Happybear Look Who’s Talking, while runner-up was given to whippet Arjai Heart of Glass. In the third show, places were decided by South Australian judge Lynn Harrison, with the winner and runner-up the same as the second show. Local dog samoyed Samooka Maui Me, owned by Kylene Micke, was awarded minor in show for two shows. Boxer Taswest Mr Maverick, owned by Kylie Slade, was runner-up best neuter in show three. Most local dogs were awarded best of breed and gained points towards a championship. For a dog to be an Australian Champion, they must have gained at least 100 points, while a Supreme Champion is a dog that has gained at least 1000 points and either three best in show awards or 10 best in group awards. The club was pleased with how the event unfolded. “What a fantastic weekend showing,” club secretary Corinne Comito said. “The weather even held until we had packed up. “Our thank-yous never seem enough for all the wonderful things that happen before and during our event. Our fantastic judges, our stewards, as always, so very much appreciated and our hard-working team who pulled it all together. “Thank you to our wonderful exhibitors for coming all the way to Geraldton. This has been a big 50th year for us, so from us to you, stay safe and hope to see you next year.” Bulldog best in breed owners Neil and Kelly Hamilton, whose dog Celtic Pryde Robert the Bruce took out top honours in his class, said they were impressed with the quality of the show. “We are from Geraldton originally but this is out first time back in a while,” they said. “We were blown away by the standard this year and its great to win our breed.” WA State dog shows are held at least twice a year at the Woorree Dog Park.
