Police are investigating a fire that caused about $300,000 damage to the Wintersun Hotel this morning.

The hotel was evacuated after the blaze was reported about 1.20am.

The fire was contained by 1.50am and no one required medical treatment, a Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said.

“They contained the fire to one unit, however, three surrounding units sustained smoke damage,” she said.

She said it was believed the building had an asbestos roof.

Two crews from the Geraldton Fire and Rescue Service and two crews from the Geraldton Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service attended.

Police were also sent to help with the evacuation.

A WA Police spokeswoman said the cause of the fire was not yet known and the Arson Squad was investigating.
