Art and nature unite: Geraldton Tree Canopy Advocates launch Birds In The Trees exhibit at Greenough Museum

The Geraldton Tree Canopy Advocates are inviting the community to celebrate the bond between nature and art with their new exhibition, Birds In The Trees, opening on Saturday, October 11, at the Greenough Museum and Gardens. Running until November 5, the exhibition showcases a collection of local artworks highlighting the vital relationship between birds and trees. Among the featured pieces are Chris Aneel’s tender painting of three tawny frogmouths, Cam Fitzgerald’s striking wedge-tailed eagle guarding her chicks, and Rebecca Hayes’ colourful depictions of black cockatoos and socialising songbirds. Shirley Staveley, a member of the Geraldton Tree Canopy Advocates, said the exhibition aimed to inspire residents to plant and care for more trees. “We are a community-based group who wish to encourage a greener and shadier town,” she said. “Ultimately, we are responsible for maintaining and supporting trees on behalf of our precious birds and wildlife.” The group, which formed in 2023, has already planted about 280 trees across Geraldton in various verges, parks, paths and public spaces, including Spalding Park. Ms Staveley encouraged visitors to “take a drive into the country, enjoy the art, and perhaps stop for lunch”. “It makes for a lovely day out,” she said. The free exhibition officially opens to the public at 3pm on Saturday, October 11.
