ATLAS and Geraldton Yacht Club launch new yachts to offer sailing to people with disability

Disability service ATLAS and the Geraldton Yacht Club launched two small yachts designed for people with disability in Geraldton last weekend, providing more inclusive sailing opportunities for the community. In December 2022, not-for-profit charity organisation ATLAS teamed with the Geraldton Yacht Club and raised $36,613 through a combination of donations and grants, purchasing two Hansa 303w yachts. The new additions will be part of a new offering in Geraldton, targeted at people with disability, and will align with the yacht club’s activities over the coming summer. On Saturday, volunteers launched the yachts, and began the call for interested skippers to join the new fleet. The program is part of the Beyond the Shore Program, an ATLAS initiative to improve access and inclusion along the Geraldton Foreshore. ATLAS executive officer Zane D’Mello said two more yachts were being prepared and would soon have four in the fleet. “The boats are ideal for learning as they are very forgiving — almost impossible to capsize — and allow for two people to man the craft,” he said. “This type of project is something ATLAS is very keen to pursue across the board, the partnership with the Geraldton Yacht Club is very positive and will open the door for everyone.” The yachts can be used for international competitions, depending on the individual’s aspiration for sport and recreation.
