One of WA’s most flourishing cycling events, the Mid West’s Backroads Gravel, will continue to thrive, thanks in part to a $30,000 boost from the State Government.

In 2025, Backroads Gravel — the biggest mass participation sporting event in the Mid West — was a finalist at the WA Sports Awards, nominated for the Community Sporting Event of the Year award.

Under the government’s sport and recreation events funding program, the cycling and running event has been allocated a $30,000 share of the overall $1.8 million in funding.

The overall funding pool is being shared by 51 sport and recreation events across WA as the government backs a diverse calendar of events across metropolitan and regional WA.

“These events encourage more Western Australians to get active, support local businesses and communities, and create opportunities for people to connect through sport and recreation,” Sport and Recreation Minister Rita Saffioti said.

As registrations open for this year’s event, this boost aims to help attract visitors to regional towns, boost local economies and provide opportunities for community events through sport and recreation.

Backroads Gravel is back for its fifth year on Saturday, August 8, and is expected to attract more than 1200 participants to Nabawa to compete in the stunning surrounds of the Chapman Valley.
