A fledgling events organiser is aiming to bring some fun into the lives of Geraldton youth by hosting a floating dance party while also raising money for a worthy cause. Balmy Events launched its first event, Silent Night at the Old Man and the Sea rooftop bar, on Christmas Eve and it was a sell-out event. Now, on May 7, there’s Balmy’s Float Party for Charity, which will set sail on Abrolhos Adventures’ catamaran at 2.30pm — complete with two dance floors, catering, water activities and local DJs including Shiggo, Smiiley, The Fridge and Cubbzy. Sponsored by Abrolhos Adventures, Mitchell and Brown Retravision, West Sole and Corner Surf, Balmy will donate all profits to Midwest Charity Begins at Home, a Geraldton-based charity offering financial relief to residents in need because of serious illness. Balmy founder Zaide Higgins said although the youth of Geraldton loved their town, there wasn’t enough happening around them without travelling away. Late-night options for young people are limited in Geraldton, with pubs closing at midnight and the city’s sole nightclub, Vibe, closed since October because of a shortage of security guards. “So seven months ago, we started Balmy,” Mr Higgins said. “Balmy’s mission is to bring together communities and provide moments that will last a lifetime without having to travel to a major city to experience them.” Tickets have sold out, so stay tuned for the next fundraiser event date.
