The Basketball State Championships are under way and Geraldton has teams competing across a range of divisions in the tournament. The tournament began last weekend with games on from November 18 and 19, and Geraldton had five Buccaneers teams in Perth for the competition. The boys under-11s division two squad lost their first three games, which put them behind in the tournament. They saw more success in the first game on Sunday against Rockingham, picking up a 31-14 win but they couldn’t keep momentum and finished with a 1-4 record. In the under-13s girls side, Geraldton had a team competing in divisions two and four along with two teams in division three. Both the division three teams came away with one win from the championship, with the pool A side getting up 15-14 over East Perth and the pool C side winning 18-9 over Cockburn. While the division four side didn’t see much success as they finished 0-5, the division two team had the strongest outing. After a slow start with back-to-back losses, they bounced back on day two with a 18-11 victory against Eastern Suns, followed up by taking down Warwick 20-7. The 2-2 record put the Geraldton side at third on the ladder in their group, but they missed the finals cut-off as only the top two sides go through. The second weekend of the tournament has three Geraldton teams in Perth with the under-15 boys in division two and three, as well as the under 11-girls in division three.
