Big Sky Readers and Writers Festival celebrates 20 years, opening with the Big SKy Short Story Prize 2025

Great news literary fanatics alike — the Big Sky Readers and Writers Festival is back for its 20th year and promises to be bigger and better than ever. To kick things off, budding writers from the Mid West and Gascoyne are encouraged to explore their imagination and showcase their literary talents by entering the fan-favourite Big Sky Short Story Prize 2025. Free to enter for anyone 18 years or older, the Big Sky Short Story Prize opens on April 18 and will close Friday, July 11, and accepts stories of all genres as long as they are unpublished works. First place will receive $500 cash, plus VIP access to Big Sky Festival events. There will be a runner-up prize of $200 and recognition of highly commended stories as well. City of Greater Geraldton mayor Jerry Clune said community members should add the event to their calendars. “Big Sky Readers and Writers Festival 2025 is going to be a big one as we celebrate 20 years of this incredible literary event,” he said. “Historically, Big Sky has always attracted an impressive line-up of local, State and interstate authors, storytellers, poets and creatives and this year will be no different. “To kickstart this event the Big Sky Short Story Prize will soon be open for submissions and I’m looking forward to seeing what our amazing homegrown talent produces.” Winners of the short story prize will be announced at the Big Sky Festival Opening Night on Friday October 24.
