Blast from the past as cricket legends gather for special veterans clash in Geraldton

It was a blast from the past on Saturday night in Wonthella as local cricketing legends were in action again to promote veterans cricket. The Golden Oldies team from Veterans Cricket WA came up to Geraldton to promote veterans cricket and to relive some past memories as most of the team have lived in Geraldton and the surrounding districts in the past 30 to 70 years. The night was also to recognise past players going back six to eight decades by presenting them with a special Geraldton legend cricket shirt. Sadly some players have died over the years, but their families were invited to accept the shirt on their behalf. Presentations were accompanied by a sausage sizzle at Wonthella Oval and a T20 game against local players from 6.30pm. Entry was a gold coin donation, which will go to the Fred Hollows Foundation. The day was organised by Greg Stephens, who thanked local politicians and the support of the Geraldton Cricket Association for allowing them to host the event. “A special thanks to the three National Party representatives for this area, Shane Love, Colin de Grussa, Martin Aldridge, and the member for Durack Melissa Price for their generous donations,” he said. “Plus a big thank you for the support of Nick and Chris Rafanelli from the Geraldton Cricket Association and for the use of their grounds.” There was also a 40-over game on Sunday at Geraldton’s Recreation Ground.
