An Australian Border Force vessel on its way to Fremantle had to make an unscheduled stop in Geraldton on Saturday when a crew member was injured.

In a statement today, Mid West Ports Authority said the crew member aboard the 58m vessel Cape Sorell slipped on a wet floor of the bridge and was believed to have suffered a fractured tibia.

The vessel was north west of the Abrolhos Islands when the incident occurred.

Port staff made arrangements to accommodate the vessel, which included ensuring an iron ore train due not obstruct ambulance access.

The crew member was treated at hospital and the vessel continued on to Fremantle about an hour after berthing.
