Boxers get the win on points as Peacocks and Skybox battle in Perth
It was an electrifying night of boxing at the Boxing WA competition in Perth, where five talented boxers from Geraldton representing Skybox and Peacocks Boxing went head-to-head against some of the best fighters in the region.
Representing Skybox, Shareef Mohammed, Sarah Butler and Frauke Rawlings stepped up to fight over three-minute rounds for the first time.
Mohammed faced Brandon Tracey from Ringfit gym in Perth, in the 57kg division, and displayed his signature slick style, but unfortunately didn’t come out on top.
Nevertheless, his impressive performance was commendable, having been away for studies and observing Ramadan for part of his training schedule.
Butler had her first bout in the elite division and went up against experienced fighter Re Ware from Seconds out gym in Perth.
It was clear from the outset that Butler had put in a tremendous amount of hard work to improve her skills to compete at the elite level as she showed real toughness and won a hard-fought points victory.
Rawlings at just 16 years old proved that age is just a number as she fought seniors for the second time.
She was on the front foot throughout the bout against Sahar Amad from Ringfit using her height and power advantage to earn a well-deserved decision win sending her opponent to the canvas late in the final round after delivering a solid right cross on the chin.
Representing Peacocks Boxing gym, young Kyson Crudeli and experienced fighter Eric Kyanga also took to the ring.
Kyanga fought hard at 86kg, displaying real strength and tenacity but was ultimately outmatched by his opponent’s range and work rate.
Meanwhile, young Kyson Crudeli showed tremendous improvement since his last outing.
Crudeli displayed a wider range of punches and movement against his opponent, Eduardo Hawkins from Dennings Boxing Club, staying behind his jab and managing to keep his skilled opponent out of range for most large portions of the fight in a points loss.
Peacocks boxing gym head coach Jake Peacock was impressed with the dedication of the regional boxers and coaches.
“It’s great to see Geraldton boxers being active, nominating for tournaments and we can’t wait to see them back in action,” he said.
