Boxthorn blitz workshops held in Geraldton to provide skills and tools needed to combat the widespread weed

The City of Greater Geraldton will be holding workshops to help combat one of Australia’s most widespread weeds. The African boxthorn was introduced to Australia in the 1800s as a hedge plant, originating from South Africa, it has become widespread across the nation. The plant can grow in dry or wet environments and displaces native vegetation, affecting biodiversity. If untreated then the plant can spread quickly and impede the native plants. Geraldton locals are invited to workshops being held by the City to gain the skills needed to treat the boxthorns, with Boxthorn Blitz kits to be provided. Mayor Shane Van Styn said the plant could be extremely difficult to get under control. “Boxthorn is a hardy plant that can handle drought, salt spray, sandblasting and grows in partial shade and full sun,” he said. “It typically reproduces through birds eating the red berries and excreting the seeds but spread can also occur through contaminated materials being dumped in our bushlands.” The workshops will be held on June 11, 17 and 18.
