Callum Williamson storms home to win Silver Cup and round 15 of the Sprintcar Series in Perth

Geraldton speedway superstar Callum Williamson continues to build on his impressive run with a win in the Sprintcar Silver Cup event in Perth on the weekend. The race, which was also round 15 of the 2023-24 Sprintcar Series, saw Williamson recover from having below standard qualifiers, to take out the feature win. During the heat races, he started at p7 but managed to finish at p2 and moved from fifth to second in his Dash race. Williamson began the feature race starting from p4, where he trailed Bunbury’s Dayne Kingshott to start out the main event. As the race went on, Kingshott held the advantage and was pulling away from the pack with Williamson at his heels. The race had been filled with collisions and faults, but the turning point came with 12 laps remaining when the leader Kingshott spun out trying to avoid the lapped car of Jarrin Bielby. The spin out gave Williamson a chance to take over, and from there the win was his as the Geraldton driver never gave anyone a chance to overtake him, winning the feature race and the Silver Cup. With the win Williamson earnt points on the Sprintcar Series ladder and a $5000 bonus for the top finish, with Kris Coyle and Daniel Harding finishing in second and third place respectively. After the race Williamson said getting the win was something him and his team had worked towards and were glad it paid off. “Yeah it was good, good to get that win for the season, I was chasing Dayne for most that race . . . guess those things happen when you are going as fast as he was, he just got caught up,” he said. “It was great to get that win for the team, we had goals at the start of the season, and we’ve probably ticked them all off now which is great.” The win continues Williamson’s successful season, which was delayed as the Geraldton driver took a break at the start before returning to the track. Since making his return, the feature winner talked about the highlights including the USA versus WA Speedweek and having more consistent results. “The highlight was probably getting to race the Americans, that was sort of a luxury every weekend,” Williamson said. “Being more consistent this year has been a massive highlight, usually we have some really good nights and then some terrible nights. “I’ve been pretty consistent all year, so that’s definitely good for the whole team and myself. The win in the round 15 race put Williamson at 10th on the overall 2023-24 Sprintcar Series ladder, sitting at 2022 points. With just three rounds left, chasing the win will be a tall task, as the current leader Kingshott has a comfortable lead over the competition with 2388 points. Round 16 of the Sprintcar Series is set to take place at the Bunbury Speedway on Friday, March 29.
