Cameron William Hamlett jailed after brutally bashing his mother in Mullewa

A Mullewa man has been jailed for more than three years over an unprovoked attack on his mother — who was left lying in a pool of blood and thinking she was going to die. Cameron William Hamlett reappeared in the Geraldton District Court on Monday for sentencing over the October 3 incident at his mother’s Mullewa home. The court heard the pair had been arguing in the kitchen at 7pm when the woman told Hamlett to “stop speaking to her in the manner he was or she would call the police”. Without warning, he picked up an unknown object — believed to be a bottle — and struck her numerous times to the head and body leaving deep cuts and causing permanent injury. The court was told Hamlett’s mother was left with a damaged tear duct causing her eye to weep, an ongoing sore shoulder and scarring. Prosecutor Edward Myers told the court after the vicious attack, the 38-year-old walked past his father leaving the house and chillingly said: “I just killed your woman”. “There were a large number of adults and children in the house,” he added. Hamlett was arrested later the same day and charged with doing an act causing bodily harm with intent to harm and taken into police custody at Greenough Regional Prison. Defence lawyer Xavier Sellathambu told the court Hamlett was “genuinely remorseful” over the incident and he was shocked at what he was able to do to a woman that he loved. He said Hamlett was suffering from drug-induced psychosis during the incident and, from prison, was reassessing the way he had been living his life. He was sentenced to three years and nine months imprisonment backdated to his arrest by Judge Fiona Vernon who said without proper treatment he was “highly likely to reoffend”. “That attack on your mother was unprovoked,” she said. “She didn’t do anything that remotely warranted that sort of behaviour.” “It would have been a very frightening scene for everybody there. You’re both lucky that your mother’s injuries were not much worse.”
