Candidates in Northampton and Irwin elected unopposed while the race is on in Chapman Valley

Two local governments surrounding Geraldton had just enough candidates put their hands up to fill their vacancies, while a Shire president has decided not to recontest his seat after six years in the top role.
Irwin Shire president Mike Smith’s term expires in October but he was not on the ballot list for the three spots available, along with Cr Grant Eva who also decided not to stand for re-election.
Cr Smith has been Irwin Shire president since 2017.
Three candidates were elected unopposed to council — existing councillors Andrew Gillam and Hayley Palmer, as well as Peter Summers.
In Northampton, it was a similar end result, with five candidates for five positions, meaning everyone was elected unopposed, including current Shire president Liz Sudlow.
The other candidates elected unopposed included current councillors Des Pike, Richard Burges and Roslyn Suckling, as well as council newcomer Karl Suckling.
There is a contest in the Shire of Chapman Valley, with seven candidates throwing their hat in the ring for four spots.
Existing councillors Trevor Royce, Katie Low and Peter Humphrey are standing for re-election, while joining them on the ballot are Peter Williams, Wayne Harris, Philip Blakeway and Emma Rodney.
Councillor Beverley Davidson is not recontesting her position on council.
Chapman Valley Shire president Kirrilee Warr’s term does not expire until 2025.
The shire president positions in Northampton and Irwin are voted by councillors, not the public.
Voters across WA will go to the ballot box on Saturday, October 21.
