Chapman Athletic celebrates culture, history as Mid West’s oldest soccer club at 75th anniversary bash
The Mid West’s oldest soccer club celebrated its platinum anniversary in October.
Chapman Athletic marked the occasion of its 75th anniversary at its annual awards with the induction of new life members and a celebration of its culture.
Secretary and club person of the year Emma Streich said the night had been a great celebration.
“It was fantastic to see the old members and new members together,” Ms Streich said.
“I couldn’t have been happier.”
Life members Helen Lumley and John Nestoridis talked about how the club started in the Glenfield area as a largely Macedonian affair, where picnics among the migrant community would feature Macedonian dancing and soccer games. Started in 1946, the club previously used the Macedonian Hall in the Glenfield area, before moving into town.
Among the awards on the night, Alessio Salato-Martinez won the league golden boot and the George Sekuloff Medal for league best and fairest.
Monica Sullivan won the women’s fairest and best, presented by life member Carlo Licastro.
Reserves players Chadd Simson, Kyle Lance, Alby Paterson and Chris Martin also received awards.
Lorcan McGonagle, a standout player for the club, received an honourable mention despite other commitments limiting his time on the pitch during the season.
Cael Robson was selected as rising star, while Holly Finfe and Phillip Davis were belle and beau of the ball.
Nilo Andreoli, Steven Streich, David Mayne and Greg Lumley were inducted as new life members.
Chapman Yellow won the Midwest Soccer Association knockout cup in the reserves this year, while the league side reached the final.
The women’s side finished second on the ladder.
