In this somewhat notoriously heightened time leading up to the Christmas season we have noticed how easily stressed people can become. On the roads, in the shopping centres, on the phone. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could stop thinking about all the things that have to be done, all the food that must be prepared, all the traditions that have to be kept up with, and the expectations of others, and just find a quiet place to breathe and to ponder the wonder of it? Consider the biblical story where God sent his son to the world as a baby in a no-frills animal shed in the stillness of night under a bright star so the whole world would come to know who loves them and would give his very life for them. Our thoughts are with those who are alone at this time, who have no one to celebrate with. Could it be someone living in our neighbourhood? Someone who works in our local shop? Could it be someone docked on a vessel out at sea? How will they know someone loves them? Jesus’ message is clear: “Love one another as I have loved you”. The best gift we could give to another person is to show this love that Jesus offers to each of us. Then it will be a very Merry Christmas indeed!
