After a seven-year hiatus and further delays, the City of Greater Geraldton is seeking proposals from contractors to take on bulk verge side collection.

The service will return in 2023 once details are sorted out with contractors, the City said in an announcement.

In September, Mayor Shane Van Styn said the City aimed to have verge collection return by the end of the year, but challenges finding a contractor had caused delays.

Mr Van Styn said the City had been organising the details of the program since it was announced in the 2022/23 budget, and was eager to get it going.

“It was one of the most popular and well-received programs to come out of this year’s budget and we’ve been working hard to get this over the line since it was passed at council as we understand how much the community values this service,” he said.

“We’ve faced a few hurdles in securing a start date given the challenges COVID-19 has thrown us in relation to contractor availability.”

Mr Van Styn said the operation will split into two smaller components, green waste and bulk hard waste, to be more manageable for contractors.

The City said it was looking for “appropriately qualified, experienced and resourced contractors” to carry out the work.

The program was ceased in 2016 by the city due to costs and untidy verges, but its return was announced in this year’s budget with $650,000 allocated to the project.

Submissions close at 12pm on Wednesday, January 11.
