City Scenes picture of the week: Chapman River after Geraldton’s wettest day in more than seven years

This photo of the Chapman River overflowing into Double Beach was taken on August 17 after the Mid West received record rainfalls, with residents saying they haven’t seen the river so full in years. It was captured by photographer Richard Porter, who said he had not seen the river that wide in the seven years he had lived in Geraldton. “There was a huge queue of people coming down to the end of Swan Drive Sunset Beach to see the ocean and the colour of the water as a result of all the mud flowing down the Chapman River from the torrential rain,” he said. Mr Porter said he recorded 84mm overnight at his Geraldton residence. Geraldton Airport recorded 61.6mm overnight, according to the Bureau of Meterology. Geraldton’s highest recorded overnight rainfall was 109.2mm on June 13, 1945.
