Construction of new 20-bay transfer station at Meru Waste Facility expected to be finished in December

Construction of a new 20-bay transfer station at Meru Waste Facility, set to make the disposing of waste safer and easier, is ahead of schedule. In an update provided this week, the City of Greater Geraldton said significant progress had been made on the $7.36 million project, with work — which had only started less than three months ago — already looking to be ahead of schedule. “Construction is well under way and we can now see the sheer scale of the project, and the new bays that are going to greatly improve how our community gets rid of its waste,” Mayor Shane Van Styn said. “Not only will it increase safety at the facility, the new station will provide more opportunities to separate waste reducing cross-contamination, and enabling more recyclable materials than ever before to be collected and processed for reuse. “As well as generating economic returns, the new facility will also extend the life of the landfill disposal cell.” Users of the facility, which caters to almost 9000 visits every month, previously only had access to the existing four-bay transfer station, which has been deemed no longer fit for purpose. The work is being undertaken by local contractor Crothers Construction and is expected to be finished in December. The project has been jointly funded, with the Federal Government contributing $1.13 million and the City the remaining $6.23 million.
